Wish-fulfilment

This refers to Freud’s famous theory of dreaming in his Die Traumdeutung (“The Interpretation of Dreams”). Freud believed that all dreams are representations of unfulfilled wishes, some of which are undisguised, and others of which are so disagreeable that they have to be censored and distorted in the dream into a symbolic form. While this theory has largely been discredited by modern research, there are now several independent experiments that have shown that dreams do indeed picture thoughts that we are trying to ignore or suppress (see dream rebound). A full glossary of Freudian terms can be found here.
